Dreams...

That's the title of the Honda periodical they send me and my dad every now and again....

But today the topic I'm gonna discuss is in fact about dreams. Me and dreams have a long history. I used to dream alot when I was young, and some of the situations in my dreams would happen in real life leading to many moments of De Ja Vu... I think some time in my younger years I kinda got tired of dreaming so I prayed to got to take all my dreams away. He did, and for many years I slept dreams free. But it came to one point that dreamless nights were kinda boring. So I asked God to give me my dreams back. Now, I do dream but not all my dreams are sweet dreams. Sometimes, actually quite often, my dreams are nightmares and they do end up in me losing alot of sleep. My shortfall though, is that I can never remember my dreams. Not unless i write it down somewhere. So far, no dreams have been worth writing down yet.

People say that dreams are a reflection of what the sub conscious is thinking. It may be influenced by what you have been worrying about silently. In Islam and many other cultures, dreams may be interpreted to have meaning that affects us in the real world. The most famous dream in the Qura'n is probably the dream of Prophet Yusof (Joseph) and later his ability to interpret dreams. Below is a little on what happened:

After being imprisoned for a few years, God had granted him with the ability to interpret dreams, a power in which he became popular amongst the prisoners. On one occasion, two less fortunate royal servants were thrown into the dungeon prior to Yusef's imprisonment for attempting to poison the food of Amenhoteb III and his family. They were haunted by two ambiguous dreams and remained unaware of the dreams due to inability to interpret it until they heard about Yusef's popularity among the citizens. They went to Yusef to seek his opinion and ask him if he could help them with solving of the problems. Yusef asked them about the dreams they had, and one of them described that he saw himself in the vineyard plucking grapes, pressing it into wine, and presenting it to the king Amenhotep III). The other one said to have seen himself holding a basket of bread on his head whereof the birds were eating. Yusef reminded the prisoners that his ability to interpret dreams was a favor from God based on his adherence to monotheism. Yusef then stated that one of the men would be released from the prison and serve the King (the one who dreamt of squeezing grapes for wine) but warned that the other would be crucified, and so was done in time.

Yusef had asked the one whom he knew would be released to mention his case to the king, and how an innocent man is improsned, so perhaps the king could help him. Yusef then realized that all along, he never asked God to get him out of prison, and that he asked for the King's help first. After realizing this, he repented and God ordered that he remain in prison for an additional number of years. The man who was released, however, had gotten occupied with life after his release, by the will of God because Yusef was meant to remain in prison, and had forgotten to mention the story of Yusef until a few years later. (see 12:36)(see 12:37)
One night the King was echoed by a mysterious dream. He was said to have seen seven fat cows being devoured by seven skinny ones and seven green spikes of wheat being replaced with shriveled ones. This dream haunted him every day and night turning him anxious and disoriented. When the servant who was released from prison heard about it, he remembered Yusef from prison and persuaded the King to send him to Yusef so that he could return with an interpretation.
Yusef told the servant that Egypt would face 7 years of prosperity and then suffer 7 years of famine and that the King should be ready for it to have Egypt avoid great suffering. The King followed the instructions and the land was saved from the great famine.
"Yusef O truthful, inform us about seven fat cows being devoured by seven skinny cows, and seven green spikes, and others shriveled."[12:46]
I wish to go back with some information for the people."[12:47] He said, "What you cultivate during the next seven years, when the time of harvest comes, leave the grains in their spikes, except for what you eat.[12:48] "After that, seven years of drought will come, which will consume most of what you stored for them. After that, a year will come that brings relief for the people.[12:49]
The king, after hearing the interpretation, knew that this man must be very wise and useful, and so he sent for him. Yusef however denied to leave right away, and asked for his name to be cleared first, and it can only be cleared if the king sought into the matter of the women who cut up their hands whom he was imprisoned because of.
The women(and Al-Aziz's wife) when confronted by the king, could not deny what they had done, and the wife admitted fully to her crime.
Yusef became the advisor of the King.

Okay. So, why am I bringing this topic up? Well, I had a conversation about a specific dream. We didn't get to finish the conversation so I went back and looked it up. Dreams have always intrigued me. So, the dream was not related to me in full but it involved a big, fat, yellow snake. So I tried to look up on dreams regarding snakes, in particular yellow snakes. I found this on an Indonesian website. It's in Indo and I'm so lazy to translate:

1) bermimpi membunuh ular, artinya anda akan berhadapan dengan musuh atau pesaing dalam bisnis dan anda menang;
2) bermimpi bertengkar dengan ular dan anda dapat dikalahkan artinya musuh atau pesaina andalah yang menang dalam kompetisi;
3) bermimpi melihat ular mempunyai kaki, artinya anda mempunyai musuh yang kuat;
5) bermimpi merasa ada ular keluar dari lubang anus, telinga atau perut artinya sebagian keluarga anda ada yang menjadi musuh secara diam-diam (membenci anda dengan diam-diam);

So, as you can see, according to this source, snake dreams can mean a lot of things, from enemies, to wealth to marriage. I did find a Malaysian blogger who seems to know the subject quite well talk about dreams. This is what he had to say, again, I'm just too lazy to translate:

Lama tak menulis, sibuk sikit. Saya cuma nak ngomel sikit tentang mimpi ular.
Tadbir mimpi ini dengan doa supaya sejahtera dan 'just wait and see'.
Wallahua'lam.

Have I overloaded you with dreamformation yet? hehehe well, just one last story I read on a forum I'd like to share with you all (yes, i took the time to translate this - because it's very short). It's about a snake dream shared by a woman and how she ended up understanding what that dream meant. By the way, it seems that only girls experience these types of snake dreams. I've not bumped across any men/boys experiencing snake dreams.... Ok, ok.. the story goes like this:

This dream happened when she was about to get engaged. She dreamt that she was sitting in a house. In that house was a big, fat yellow snake, larger than an anaconda. At the same time a lot of other snakes were coming in for the windows. She was in the room and all those snakes were trying to bite her. Whilst busy dodging the snake bites, she noticed a skinny snake coming towards her, it looked like it was hurt, like it was asthmatic or something. She didn't give much thought to that snake as she was busy dodging all the other normal snakes. In the confusion it turns out that the asthmatic in the end was the snake that finally bit her... duh

 Okay, so how did this dream effect her in real life. Well, according to her, following that dream many suitors came to ask her hand in marriage, 4 or 5 people asked for her hand. She didn't know any of these men so it was difficult to choose and make a decision. Among these men were rich men, fat men, older men, various types of men. She finally did her istikharah and her choice turned out to be a very religious man. He just returned from studies in Yemen. The man was not a well off man so it was difficult, the mother sponsored her wedding and there was no hantaran as to not burden him. After they got married only then she knew that her husband had pneumonia and was always short of breath so he couldn't do any hard labour. Nevertheles, she was greatful to have a husband that could guide her in the ways of Islam.

they now have 2 children and their fortunes have turned for the better. The husband is now an Imam at a big mosque and he has opened a tahfiz school. They also have a few small businesses. Things turned out well for them alhamdulillah...

So, that's the little story I learnt from a credible forum. Whatever it is, I am no dream expert but it is interesting to know that these yellow snake dreams are not uncommon. How they are interpreted depends on the story that the snake appears in the dream. What ever it is, God knows best...
